More than 645,000 people never got the payment, according to a study published in May by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. If you belong to one of the following categories, you might have missed it:

1. This applies to 419,822 Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) holders who have a qualifying dependent.

2. 133,578 people eligible for the exclusion from receiving unemployment benefits.

3. 51,639 people who have been mistakenly identified as residents of a US territory.

4. 39,666 people affected by filing modifications or unresolved conditions on their tax accounts.

How Do I Check If I Am Owed Money?

You should have received the two key letters the IRS sent regarding stimulus checks and the child tax credit by now. Your eligibility to claim the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return will be determined by the information provided in Letter 6475, which was related to stimulus payments. The letter also contained information on how to claim it.

There are additional ways to check if you don't recall receiving a letter. You could check the amount deposited by going through your bank statements from the previous year. Another choice is to log in to your online account and see the tax records page's "economic effect payment information" section.

Parents can visit the IRS's site for the child tax credit to view payments made to their online accounts. If you're absolutely unsure, schedule an appointment with a tax expert for assistance because filing incorrectly will frequently cause delays. However, there will be a filing charge as the cutoff date for free filing was May 18. For those who asked for an extension, there is an exception that lasts through October.
